Allen Families--

One day, an old man was walking along a beach that was littered with thousands of starfish that had been washed ashore by the high tide. As he walked he came upon a young boy who was eagerly throwing the starfish back into the ocean, one by one.

Puzzled, the man looked at the boy and asked what he was doing. Without looking up from his task, the boy simply replied, “I’m saving these starfish, Sir”.

The old man chuckled aloud, “Son, there are thousands of starfish and only one of you. What difference can you make?”

The boy picked up a starfish, gently tossed it into the water and turning to the man, said, “I made a difference to that one!”

During my very first staff meeting at Allen, I shared with staff a deeply held belief that I have about educating kids.  Relationships matter.  There are times we must lose the curriculum before we lose the kid.  Sometimes we must put aside the math or literacy work and tend to the heart of the child.  You may have had some times this past couple weeks, where you faced that battle.  Do I keep forcing this forward or do I take a few moments and just be with and hear my child.  I have always found that a few minutes of listening to the heart, has created a stronger relationship and in turn a more successful working relationship.

You might be asking, “Where are you going with this?  I know my kid’s heart.”  Yes, we know our kids.  I have three at home.  But we have not had to know our kids in this format, nor, have they had to know us in this way.  We typically got to be mom or dad when they got in the car after school and just listen to their good days and bad days.  Now we are directing those days…everyday.  All I am really saying, is that your relationship with your child is more important than a math lesson.  I want to empower each of you to feel free to read a situation and adapt as needed.  We certainly each have expectations for our kids to work hard and accomplish the tasks ahead of them each day.  I find I have to love mine through it at times due to the completely different learning environment in which we find ourselves.  Lose the curriculum before you lose the kid.

The work you are doing each day matters.  Sometimes it may not seem like much and other days it seems like too much, but every little bit helps as we work together to keep kids engaged.  You are making a difference!

Spring Break--Spring break begins Friday, April 3rd and runs through Sunday, April 12th.  School work will not be assigned during spring break.  School engagement for this week will be for Monday-Thursday.

Food Service
--Bus delivery of meals started this past week to reach more children and families. Buses will run Monday, Wednesday, and Friday of each week.  The buses will run elementary and special education bus routes the drivers would run during a typical school day.  The routes will still allow the meals to reach all grade levels.  They have reduced the buildings offering drive up meal pick up to Hixson and Soddy Elementary Schools in the North River learning community.  Allen no longer will distribute food.

Allen Hours
—School hours are 10-2PM.  I will have the door with the signage unlocked during those hours for you to access information or packets from the table.

Related Arts
—As we continue to work and improve, we have put all things related arts on the school website at  Check under the ‘For Students’ tab on the top right of the page.  The related arts lessons and videos are all listed under the ‘Distance Learning’ section and ‘Related Arts’ button.  We just started building it out today.  This will take the place of classroom teachers or others emailing related arts information.  When your kids want to tackle some art or get some exercise, visit the website and check out the latest offerings.  Art, Computers, Library, Music, and PE will all have their information on that page. Our hope is this will keep you from visiting different platforms or searching old emails for related arts information, as it is all in one place.
